The road to Cradock 1997
Truth & Lies - this image was taken on the way back from visiting the notorious Post Chalmers, signposted a 'holiday farm' - this diguised the real goings on which included illegal detentions, interrogation, murder at a secret prison on a farm far away from the nearest town, Cradock, and any recourse to proper legal representation. Needless to say the hapless inmates were 'disappeared' and never heard of again - the fate came to light during the TRC hearings. 1996 – 2002: Stories from The Truth and Reconciliation Commission after the fall of Apartheid in South Africa

“I photographed Nelson Mandela in 1997, as part of a commission to document South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” says Jillian. “He was the President at that time and I went to the presidential house. When I first met him, he put out his hand and I had a physical reaction that has never happened with anyone else before or since. I had a smile which felt like it was going to crack my face apart. That’s the only way I can describe it. When I was photographing him, he was so modest, easy and helpful, completely humble and giving. I was given ten minutes. At that time he was going through a difficult personal time and he had recently divorced from Winnie Mandela. What I managed to capture, in an off-guard moment, was some kind of poignancy and sadness.”

Bert Hardy, Picture Post photographer and Anne Scott-James, women's editor of the magazine during the war. The elegant Fleet-street journalist who became Lady Lancaster recalled the Cockney snapper's penetrating eye, his charm. In her autobiographical book, Sketches from Life she devoted a chapter to Hardy. : 'Some of our assignments were far away in the provinces, and the travelling conditions might be rugged, with crowded or even benighted trains, scarce food and sordid hotels, but Bert always made the trip more of an adventure than a slog.'

Dafoe regularly shuns the film world to work with the improvisational theatre company the Wooster Group, which is how he met Kate. 'She was shy and self effacing, but such a natural performer. I feel like I've grown up with her. I'm always excited to see her. How many people can say that about a colleague?’.

In 1988, Michael Clark nearly died. One of Britain's most gofted young dancers, his addiction to drink and drugs had led to two overdoses. Then, in 1989, he met the American chorographer Stephen Petronio while walking with his mother at Glasgow's Mayfest. It was the beginning of a relationship that was to help Stephen kick his drug habit. It was seeing the American dancer's work that reawakened his own interest in dance and life.
