Ash from the fireplace thrown on the grass. Tayvallich, Argyll and Bute, West Scotland. Both wood and coal are still burnt by many people during West Scotland's unforgiving and often brutal winter. The jury is 'still out' concerning wood's 'green credentials.' There is a polarization of opinion concerning woods environmental footprint. Much of the difference in opinion centres around whether an open fireplace or a closed stove is used to burn the wood. Of course, there is little debate about coal's destructive effect upon the atmosphere because it releases dangerous elements, metals and large amounts of carbon dioxide. So, what motivates people to continue to burn wood and coal? As in this photograph; there is a positive by-product of throwing wood ash on your grass or garden, it changes the pH of the soil. Wood ashes will raise the pH and lower the acid in the soil. 2018
